On Sunday, January 7th, Oprah Winfrey gave a speech at the Golden Globe awards in Beverly Hills, California. Winfrey has been an inspiration to many women throughout the years. The speech she gave at the awards brought tears and smiles to many more than just the women who look up to her. Winfrey was the first black women to ever win a Golden Globe award. In her speech she said, “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have, and I’m especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that they tell, and this year we become the story.”
After a standing ovation she said, “They are the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers, and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world in tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the Olympics, and they’re our soldiers in the military.” Throughout Winfrey’s speech she spoke out to women who do not have a voice, the men who were or are overpowering, and was declaring equality among us all.
The 2016 election was a huge event for Americans when business man and celebrity, Donald Trump, announced that he would be running against business women and former first lady, Hillary Clinton. Clinton has ran in several different elections in hope to be the first female president, but was unsuccessful each time. Even though Trump won the election, the two competed with aggression and ended with very close results.
Winfrey has not yet announced that she is running, but Trump is confident that he will serve for a second term. He said, “Yeah I’ll beat Oprah” and then later said, “Oprah would be a lot of fun. I know her very well… I like Oprah. I don’t think she’s gonna run.” Many on Twitter seem to think or hope that Winfrey will run. One example is Spencer Claus tweeting, “Oprah please run for president” and Patti Solis Doyle tweeted “I could definitely get behind Oprah as the first woman president of the United States #Oprah”. However there are some who do not think she will run like her best friend Gayle King, who said on CBS This Morning “I’m thinking she is not going to be running for president, I do think she is very intrigued, and I also say, as I’ve heard for many years on the ‘Oprah Winfrey Show,’ you always have the right to change your mind. But that is certainly not something she’s considering right now.”
When Winfrey was interviewed by Los Angeles Times who said, “The internet is saying Oprah for president 2020.” She completely dodged the question, saying she was just glad she got through the speech and was just hoping it would be a memorable moment. When asked if she will be running, she just smiled and said, “Okay,” and walked away. In the past she has said that she will never run for public office and that her answer was definite. Perhaps her point of view has changed, as she once said, “You always have the right to change your mind.”
Urbandale freshman, Lillian Dekeyzer, was asked, “What is your opinion of Oprah and how would you feel if she ran for president?” She answered with, “I feel like Oprah has had a huge impact on us females, but I personally can not vote. I feel like she would do great though.” Junior, Jarrod Mickelson, was also asked this question and he said, “I feel like she takes advantage of the fact that she is a black woman and her entire election would be just on that.”
