Balancing school and being a high school student can be hard when working a part-time job. However, students with part-time jobs believe that working a part-time job contributes to learning important life skills and lessons that can be used in everyday life.
“I am a courtesy. This means I bag groceries and carry them out to people’s cars. I also face items on the shelf. [I’ve learned] How to work with others and work with different personalities. How to be responsible, be on time and make your priorities in life.” said Alyssa Hinderaker, a sophomore who works at Fareway.
Alyssa participates in school volleyball in the fall and club volleyball in the winter.
She goes on to say “ [I] Have good time management and make my priorities straight. I always put school first, then my job, then extra activities. I think it is good for a student to get a job to help them better grow independence and responsibilities.”
As a high school student, it can be hard to juggle the responsibilities of keeping up with assignments, understanding content given by teachers, working a part-time job as well as being a teenager in general.
Kara Wildermuth, a sophomore who works at the Illahee Hills, a senior retirement home, says, “It is kind of hard to juggle school with a job, but if you manage your work schedule and your school schedule you should be fine. It’s also okay to try different things out to see what best fits the way your schedule lays out.”
Most part-time and high schooler-friendly jobs require employees to be in close contact with customers or co-workers. Some students that are on the fence about getting a job worry about their own health, especially with COVID.
“Working as a high school student is stressful, but remember you have your whole life to work. If you don’t have time to work, and you don’t necessarily need to work a lot then you need to make sure to take time for yourself. Your health is more important.”, says Starbucks barista, and junior, Kaitlin Mogle.
Acquiring a part-time job while in high school can teach you useful skills that stay with you for the rest of your life, but it’s important to make sure you are ready to start working, especially with others.
